WUK Vienna - Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus

Title

WUK Vienna - Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus

Description

Amazingly preserved complex of industrial red brick buildings, with nice courtyard, kids' playground, lofts for workshops and hand crafts, and big concert hall. Most interesting is this is still a squated building - in 1981 the municipality just allowed the initiators to come in - and they are still there, now as a flourishing and lively institution.

I was impressed by the freedom and informality - and the existance of this place for critical, non-commercial and independent culture, though very close to the downtown. Real luxury - possible in this still a bit socilaist-minded Austria!
